Grace House Akron Reveals Location

The long-anticipated house location revealed at nonprofit’s fundraiser

During the ‘Raise Our Roof’’ event, hosted by Grace House Akron, the location was revealed for Summit County’s first and only home for terminally ill patients who otherwise don’t have a safe environment to receive hospice care.

Indigent, homeless and abandoned individuals will soon find comfort during their last days at 475 North Howard Street, the official site of Grace House Akron.

When the 6-bed home is complete, services are provided without charge to allow a dignified death without financial barriers, something that is not currently offered to Akron’s homeless or working poor.

With land secured, the organization has launched its capital campaign to raise the majority of funds needed. The House will require $1.2 million to build and an additional $350,000 each year to maintain services for those in need.

The capital campaign launched Friday evening at The Well CDC on East Market Street in Akron. Guests were the first to hear the announcement that Summa Health was the contributing partner in the land, selling the property site for $10 to Grace House Akron.

“As we looked to repurpose the whole St. Thomas campus,” Dr. Cliff Deveny, Summa Health System CEO said, Summa officials knew there was a better purpose for the spot where the Cityview Building that sat vacant for 20 years.

“The lot is perfect for Grace House’s needs.  We are relieved that our year long search for a location has ended and we are grateful for Summa’s generosity and willingness to work with us,” said Holly Klein, President of Grace House Akron.

With the purchase agreement signed, zoning applications submitted and closing with the title company, solidifying the location of the house is a pivotal moment in the journey of Grace House.

Sponsors of the event included Alco, Leigh & Anita Herrington, The Richard & Alita Rogers Family Foundation, Huntington, Summa Hospice, Reidy Medical, Galaxy Medical, Adkins Building Company, Hospice of the Western Reserve, David Simpson, Pleasant Valley Corporation, Roetzel, AM Higley, Robert J. Events & Catering, GPD, Summa Health and Triad Marketing.
